The process behind manufacturing paper is far more complex than you might imagine. Having paper with a high-quality ink receiver layer ensures ink hitting the surface stays exactly where it is supposed to be. This is vital if you wish to print photo quality images with fine detail and smooth half tones. Printing paper used in traditional toner-based machines typically has a very flat surface (resulting in prints with a flat image) unlike high-quality instant-dry satin papers where the surface is made up of tens of thousands of tiny pyramids. This allows for heavy saturation of ink-building layers without the individual droplets of ink bleeding into one another, which can result in metamerism or bronzing, making colours appear to shift under different lighting conditions, or small colour variations becoming completely lost.

Our 190 gram 24" 610mm X 60m high-white instant-dry satin paper works equally well with both dye-based and pigmented inks. In situations where you need your photo quality images to be fade resistant, we would always recommend using pigmented inks (see our Z range of machines), where there is no compromise on quality, but you get all the benefits of an ink designed to remain looking as vibrant, year after year. Photo-realistic prints

The holy grail of digital printers is to produce photo-realistic prints. For many years the challenge has been to produce image results which compare equally to those achieved by photographers who develop their own prints using a completely different printing technique.

Inkjet printing differs from photographic developing in that each image is made up of miniscule dots which combine to create a full image. If viewed microscopically, you can actually small areas of white between each dot. It is the way the human eye operates that instead of seeing these white spaces, the eye joins the coloured dots together and the white spaces become imperceptible.

To get as close as possible to photo-realistic prints, two things are required. First, a printer which can deliver the highest number of dots in a given area (DPI) and thus leaving the least areas of white. The result is much closer to a real photograph.

Accurate ink absorbtion

The second key element is the paper. The role of paper in this process is critical as the higher the quality of the sarin paper or gloss photo paper, the greater the volume of ink that can be absorbed and the quicker it can be absorbed, which eliminates edge bleeding or fuzziness.
